Renewal is far lighter than the first application, but it still needs a current medical certificate and a valid residence document, and expired licences are treated differently from licences renewed on time.
Renew before it expires and it is a short visit. Let it lapse for long enough and you can find yourself repeating tests you already passed.

It depends how long ago. Beyond certain periods the transport office requires you to retake tests. Bring us the licence and we will tell you which category you fall into before you make a wasted trip.
Can I renew early?
There is a window before expiry in which renewal is accepted, and using it is the sensible move, particularly if you are about to travel.
