The mistake foreigners make when buying a car here is leaving it registered in the seller's name, or in a friend's name, because it seemed simpler at the time. It is simpler right up until you want to sell it, insure it or prove it is yours.
You can register a vehicle in your own name as a foreigner. It needs a residence certificate, which we obtain as part of our visa service.
Before you buy any used car here
- Check the book, the blue registration document, and confirm the seller is the registered owner.
- Confirm there is no outstanding finance against the vehicle.
- Check the tax and the compulsory insurance are current.
- For a car of any age, pay for an inspection. Coastal air and flood history are both real issues in this part of Thailand.
- Get a written purchase agreement rather than a handshake and a cash envelope.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really register a car in my own name?
Yes, with a residence certificate from immigration or an equivalent embassy letter. Registering it in someone else's name to save a step is the mistake that costs people the car later.
Should I buy or rent long term?
Under a year, renting usually wins once you count registration, insurance and depreciation. Over a year, buying usually wins. We will run the numbers for your actual situation.
