If you already hold a valid licence from your own country, or an international driving permit, you do not have to sit a driving exam. That is the single fact most foreigners in Pattaya do not know, and it turns a process people dread into an afternoon of paperwork.
The Thai driving licence itself is not difficult. What defeats people is the chain of documents that has to be complete before the transport office will even look at them, and the fact that a missing piece means coming back another day.
You will need proof that you reside in Thailand, a medical certificate, your passport with a valid entry, and to pass the vision, depth perception and reaction tests plus a theory paper. We assemble all of it and go with you.
What you need before the transport office will start
- Passport with a valid entry stamp or visa.
- A residence certificate from immigration, or an equivalent letter from your embassy. We obtain the immigration one for you.
- A medical certificate from a Thai clinic, issued recently. We arrange this locally in Pattaya.
- Photographs to the correct specification.
- Your existing foreign licence if you intend to convert rather than start from scratch.
The tests, in plain terms
There are three physical tests: colour recognition, depth perception and brake reaction time. They are simple, but people fail the reaction test by overthinking it. It measures how quickly you move from accelerator to brake, nothing more.
The theory paper is multiple choice and includes questions on Thai specific road law, which is why we prepare you on the real question bank rather than on general driving theory.
If you are converting a valid foreign licence, the practical driving test is often waived. If you are starting from zero, you take it, and our training exists to make that a formality.
Two years, then five
A first Thai licence is issued for two years. When you renew it, you receive a five year licence, and every renewal after that is also five years. The renewal is much lighter than the first application, and we handle those too.
How it works

- 3
Preparation
Theory question bank in your language, plus driving or riding training if you need it.
- 4
Transport office
We take you, queue for you, translate through the tests and stay until the licence is printed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive on my international driving permit instead?
An international permit issued abroad is generally recognised for a limited period after arrival, alongside your home licence. It is a travel document, not a residence solution. Once you live here, a Thai licence is the document that works without argument at a checkpoint and at an insurance desk.
Do I need a separate licence for a motorbike?
Yes. Car and motorbike are separate licences and many people take both on the same day, which saves a second round of documents and a second trip.
What if I fail a test?
You retake it. It is not dramatic and it is not expensive. We would rather prepare you properly first, which is why we run through the reaction test with clients before the appointment.
Is my Thai licence valid in other countries?
On its own it is valid in Thailand and in several ASEAN countries. Paired with an international driving permit issued here on the back of it, it becomes usable much more widely. We issue those too.
